About: We are always on the prowl for fun and educational learning games for my special needs son, that has ADHD and Dyslexia. I was very thrilled for the opportunity to review The Starfall Home Membership from Starfall Education Foundation.
A membership is for a year and it is a family membership. Meaning anyone in your family can use it on their computers or tablets. This gives everyone access to games, riddles, songs, poetry, and a reading library. This is great for those that like to be at a computer working or if your child needs some fun time practice you can download their easy to use app. Both ways are super kid friendly to navigate and to practice their Language Arts skills.
I used this with my 9 year old. In my home we do not push and strive for reading at 5 years old like they do in public school. We thrive to make it fun and to learn when they are ready. However he was ready but his attention span and dyslexia has put a bump in the road of learning. He loves games and being on his tablet though so we downloaded the app to it for him to use. I get him to practice on it each day of the school week and he usually spends about 30 minutes on it.
He really enjoyed the library that Would read out loud to him as it highlighted the sentence for him to follow along. I really liked this feature too so that he could actually focus on the right words as it was reading and it gave me time to work with the other kids while he was getting reading time in.
Then there are fun games to practice spelling. You see the word and hear it then you can practice putting them in the right order. Repetition of things like this I have always found works well with kids. The membership also offers some math games too, which I don’t believe are included in the free version of Starfall. The math has all kinds of things like time, puzzles, weight, patterns and so much more.
There is also a parent/teacher sections. This place allows you to find full curriculum units that teach the basics. You can also download additional help items like readers and charts.
There is lots to do and works with you if your child is just starting to learn ABC’s for if they are starting to learn to read. They can get help with phonics or even colors. It’s a great starting point for any child homeschooled or not and a great tool to have through their first years in school to help learn and reinforce those very important skills. My son is working hard on his phonics and reading. He much prefers to get the joy of a game he can navigate himself then sitting down with a pen and paper trying to spell words.
It has a great voice when reading or giving instructions unlike some programs we have come across. Sometimes voices are hard to understand or to robotic for the kids to focus on. This one we didn’t have any issues with and was a joy to work with. Since we have figured out all the fun things to do with it I am going to put it on my 4 year olds tablet and let him work with learning his letters. I think he will enjoy it as much as his brother. I also believe that if my readers give it a try they will love it too.
